Defining Good Practice Approaches to Land Acquisition and Resettlement in Myanmar

The IFC has published the workshop summary and presentations for a multistakeholder workshop it held on defining good practice approaches to land acquisition and resettlement in Myanmar in May. 

The workshop was attended by around 40 experts from the IFC, international and Myanmar business, Myanmar government and civil society organisations. It discussed and sought to define practical approaches to managing private sector projects in Myanmar, and specifically to managing land risks and issues in accordance with international good practice such as IFC Performance Standard 1 (Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts) and Performance Standard 5 (Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement).

MCRB spoke on the current context in Myanmar, drawing on its recent briefing paper on Land. The key issues arising from the workshop included the need for enhanced project-level engagement and due diligence – and the associated allocation of increased resources, expertise, and follow-up – as well as for engagement on macro-level issues such as legal and policy reform.
