MCRB at Myanmar People’s Forum
On 29 December, the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business hosted a workshop at the Myanmar People’s Forum on Business and Human Rights at Myanmar Convention Centre in Yangon.
An expert panel included representatives of MCRB, the Farmers’ National Network, Paung Ku and Action Labour Rights.
Their presentations covered human rights due diligence and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, land grabs in the Pyin Oo Lwin area and impacts on farmers welfare, a case study of the Dawei Special Economic Zone comparing it to a problematic Thai industrial estate, Mabthabut, and the current situation concerning respect for workers rights and freedom of association.
Representatives of over 50 organisations as well as individuals took part in the workshop which adopted recommendations to government which were included in the final statement (download relevant English extracts) which will be transmitted to government and to the ASEAN People Forum and ASEAN Civil Society Conference in Yangon in March 2014.
MCRB sponsored the attendance of some Shan State grass roots activists working on corporate accountability, and the occasion also offered the opportunity to circulate copies of the December issue of the ‘Journal of Human rights and Democracy’ published by Myanmar Knowledge Society (MKS) which was dedicated to business/human rights and includes an interview with Centre Director Vicky Bowman, and an article on operational grievance mechanisms by Hnin Wut Yee.
