Pwint Thit Sa follow-up: MCRB holds workshops on Human Rights Policy and Human Rights Reporting Framework
As part of its programme of enhancing Myanmar companies’ understanding of international standards and transparency, MCRB recently organised two half-day workshops in Yangon with a human rights and business focus.
The first, on 22nd October, focussed on how to develop a human rights policy. It was attended by 41 participants, mostly from Myanmar companies, including staff working in human resources, compliance, community and corporate relations, and communications.
The presentation and discussion covered the Pwint Thit Sa project, which human rights are relevant to business and what a corporate human rights policy for business looks like, as well as international standards, including the UN Global Compact and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The workshop also heard from Anastacia Howe on MPRL E&P’s development of their human rights approach, and other companies shared their experiences.
Bobbie Sta. Maria of the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, a website resource which gathers examples of company policies, presented on what other companies do, and international best practice on human rights policies.
On 3rd November, MCRB organised a half-day workshop on “Human Rights Reporting Frameworks” in Yangon for 40 participants from both local and foreign businesses operating in Myanmar.
Speakers included Vicky Bowman (MCRB), Bobbie Sta. Maria and Anna Triponel (SHIFT) who presented on the Business and Human Rights Reporting and Assurance Frameworks Initiative (RAFI).
Belinda Ford from Coca Cola Myanmar spoke about Coke’s experience of reporting against the State Department’s Reporting Requirements for US companies investing in Burma:
Participants shared their experiences of assessing and reporting on the human rights impacts of their businesses.
