What Remains of the Myanmar Economy Post-Coup
On 16 September 2024, Vicky Bowman, MCRB Director was interviewed by Pamela Kennedy of the Stimson Center on what has happened to Myanmar's economy since the 1 February 2021 military coup, and the outlook for the future.
Since the junta’s takeover of Myanmar in February 2021, Myanmar’s economy has been devastated by the effects of the war, sanctions, and the economic policies of the military government. Human rights violations and due diligence remain difficult in Myanmar, complicating the process of sourcing goods and materials from the country. These issues all pose long-term obstacles for the future of Myanmar’s federal economy.
