Training Session: Land Rights Documentation
On 11-12 December 2014, Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business (MCRB) hosted a training session in Yangon on “Land Rights Documentation” in response to a request from various farmers’ networks.
Around 35 representatives from civil society organisations in Mandalay, Magway, Sagaing, Ayeyarwaddy Divisions and Shan State participated in the training, and resource persons came from MCRB, Equality Myanmar, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and EarthRights International.
The training covered:
-
Basic Principles of Human Rights Documentation and Interviewing
-
Ethics and Security
-
Checklist for questions on land rights documentation
-
Land Policy Update and Conflict Resolution
-
Fundamental Citizen Rights and how national and international human rights mechanisms can work in dealing with land rights issues in Myanmar.
MCRB's recent sector-wide impact assessment (SWIA) on oil and gas recognised that land is the most complex issue for investors in Myanmar and needs to be handled in a way which respects the rights of land users and meets international standards.
MCRB will shortly publish a briefing paper for companies on issues relating to land, business and human rights in Myanmar.
